IMM 2011
International Design Furniture Fair, Cologne
The IMM Cologne 2011 marked Felix Schwake’s first appearance at an international trade fair and simultaneously represented an important turning point in the public perception of his work. At the international design and furniture fair in Cologne, Felix Schwake presented his designs for the first time to a broad professional audience from the fields of architecture, interior design, and the furniture industry.
Exhibited on the “Boulevard of Innovations” — the curated section of the fair dedicated to innovative design concepts and technological developments in interior design — was the multimedia table K-1. There, the project received the “Interior Innovation Award 2011” presented by the German Design Council.
The design of the K-1 follows a central architectural question that continues to shape Felix Schwake’s work to this day: How can technical and functional complexity be fully integrated into a calm, clear, and architectonic form?
The table incorporates those objects that typically dominate the visual environment of a workspace — computers, cables, speakers, writing utensils, and technical devices — and integrates them entirely within its construction. Four extendable functional compartments accommodate multimedia equipment, storage, and organizational functions without disturbing the clarity of the table’s external geometry.
Particularly characteristic is the deliberate separation between use and appearance. While the table is highly organized on a technical and functional level, its external form remains restrained, calm, and almost sculptural. Even the speakers disappear invisibly beneath perforated covers integrated into the construction.
The jury of the “Interior Innovation Award” particularly acknowledged this combination of minimalist design and practical everyday usability. Rather than forcing the user into order, the K-1 integrates the unavoidable complexity of everyday life into the architectural logic of the furniture itself.
The presentation at IMM Cologne 2011 made clear that Felix Schwake does not understand furniture as isolated design objects, but rather as spatial instruments for organizing atmosphere, concentration, and calmness. The exhibition therefore marked the beginning of a series of international awards and further developments in the field of functional art and architectural furniture design.
