Nomination
Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany 2012

With the nomination for the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany 2012, Felix Schwake was recognized for a design that exemplifies his approach to combining minimalist design with functional precision. The nominated desk K-1 unites reduced geometry with a complex technical and organizational infrastructure fully integrated into the furniture itself.

The Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany was regarded as one of the country’s most prestigious design distinctions and honored projects that combined high design quality with innovative development.

The Desk K-1 follows a deliberately clear and calm formal language. Externally, the object appears almost sculpturally reduced. Its technical and organizational complexity remains entirely concealed and does not visually dominate the surrounding space.

Inside the desk are four extendable functional compartments that accommodate multimedia technology, computer hardware, and organizational work materials. In addition to storage space for technical infrastructure, the furniture integrates numerous solutions for the everyday requirements of a contemporary workspace.

Particularly central to the concept is the idea that function should neither be suppressed nor artificially abstracted. Office materials, technical devices, and working tools are not eliminated, but precisely organized and kept immediately accessible. As a result, the workspace remains calm and ordered without sacrificing practical usability.

The desk surface is relieved of visible technology, cables, and work utensils, thereby creating a concentrated spatial atmosphere while maintaining full functional accessibility at all times.

The project illustrates a central principle within the work of Felix Schwake: design should not operate through additional visual complexity, but through precise integration. Technology and organization become fully embedded within the geometry of the object itself.

The desk K-1 therefore exemplifies the connection between architecture, functional art, and technological innovation for which Felix Schwake received early international recognition.
