Foreword

Artificial intelligence is currently changing the tools, processes and images of design at great speed. Hardly any area of architecture, design or creative practice remains unaffected. At the same time, the question of the future role of human beings in the design process is becoming increasingly pressing.

The symposium “Designing. AI and other cultural protagonists” understands this development as a cultural and design challenge as well as a technological one.

Its focus is on the question of the capacity for judgment, responsibility and decision-making in design. AI can process information, generate variants and support processes. It does not, however, assume responsibility or possess the ability to assess spatial, social and cultural consequences.

The symposium brings together positions from architectural theory, design theory and education, design practice and research. Its aim is a shared discourse on how design changes under the conditions of digital tools – and which foundations must be preserved.

Through the symposium, AMD Düsseldorf seeks to create a space for professional debate, critical reflection and interdisciplinary exchange.
