Theme and questions

What is it about?

The symposium “Designing. AI and other cultural protagonists” addresses how design changes under the conditions of artificial intelligence.

Its focus extends beyond the use of new digital tools to the fundamental question of responsibility, the capacity for judgment and authorship in the design process.

Artificial intelligence can generate images, develop variants, analyse data and accelerate processes. At the same time, there is a danger that design will be reduced to image production and statistical probabilities. This brings a central question back to the heart of architectural and design practice:

Where does the capacity for judgment arise in design – and who bears responsibility for the decision?

The symposium brings together positions from architectural theory, design theory and education, design practice, technology and research. Lectures, discussions and contributions bring different perspectives on AI and design into dialogue.

The intention is neither to set the analogue against the digital nor to reject technological developments. Instead, the symposium examines how digital tools can be meaningfully integrated into design processes without displacing responsibility, perception and critical reflection.

The symposium understands design as a cultural practice: a process of perception, deliberation and reasoned decision-making.

Central questions

  • How does AI change the methods and tools of design?
  • Where does the capacity for judgment arise in the digital design process?
  • What roles do perception, experience and embodied experience play in design?
  • How do authorship, responsibility and decision-making change in design?
  • What is the significance of the interplay between analogue and digital tools?
  • What happens to design when hardly any time separates an idea from an image?
  • How does AI change teaching in architecture, interior architecture and design?
  • What cultural, social and technological shifts arise through AI?
  • What are the possibilities and limits of AI-supported design methods?
  • How can technological developments be integrated critically and responsibly into design and planning?

The invited speakers represent different positions from theory, research, teaching and practice. The aim is not a definitive conclusion, but open professional debate about a development that will change architecture and design in the long term.
